Hello once this February 2010 again to the homepage of "uber hoarder" and Transformer collector, WSX! LOL. I have been hauling like no body's business, and least of all I hope that I am NOT being chastised for being a show-off or just plain jobless with a huge dollar signs on my face, let me assure you guys that I haven't gone too far to obtain my precious and growing collection by doing "illegal" "escapades"..haha... Well, its simple really, WSX always subscribes to the age old saying that the real secret of collecting is always finding ways for your "income to work in your favor." As some of you may remember, in some of my past blog-posts about how Black Repaints have an "unhealthy" effect on my collecting fascination? Well, no sooner did I declare my new found penchant for rare Transformers, Ive gone out and done it again....
More Box and in tray pics when I obtain it in hand- coming soon!
Essentially, this exclusive Japanese version of Masterpiece Convoy is being sanctioned as a "Clone Cybertron Warrior", modeled and simulated utilizing the blue-prints and specifications of one of the Autobots most revered Commander, Convoy. MP01-B Black Convoy's main reason for existence is to become an "Elite" Guard / personal protector "muscle" for important Cybertronian dignitaries. I guess, from the looks of the exclusively drawn manga/comic which comes with the "Official" e-Hobby release, he is also used for 'special ops' missions where the scope and severity is above and beyond the capabilities of the rest of his comrades.
Once again, this Masterpiece is yet another one of those time-trusted "Black" repaints done on a (supposedly) limited number of batches. As to how many "official" non- Hong Kong Versions of the toy were made, it has yet to be verified by any credible source, TakaraTomy included. The stylised shots and pictures are credited to two contributing sources, firstly from (HK-TF member chenkofs) of the Chinese Transformers portal : www.tfclub.com and not to mention eHobby Japan themselves. WingSaberToyz extends a sincere and humble and sincere thanks to them. :-)
ROBOT MODE
A typical Black/ Chase repaint, consisting of maroon-tinged front chest windows, some metallic Teal markings, he looks sharp and intimidating. In the comic version, Convoy Black Ver. is portrayed as being a "tough-as nails" and no-holes barred fighter - which really doesn't hurt the reputation of the toy either. A++
ACCESSORIES
He essentially is packed with the same accessories as his previous two Convoy-type releases MP-01, MP-02 Ultra Magnus, and MP-04 Convoy with Trailer. However, unlike his previous accessories, there are noticeable changes in the colour (deep reddish/ maroon) used for his "Energon Axe" and "Dead Matrix"-- supposedly just a power-generator, poorly built replica of the original Matrix of Leadership.
In addition, there are different two choices of stickers which can be placed on the "wrist communicator screen" of this Autobot Clone-- that of either Convoy or Rodimus Convoy. A neat little attention to detail. Also worth mentioning , if not insignificant is that the Megatron Gun is now a darker shade of silver, as compared with the light painted metallic version of previous Masterpiece Convoys. His "Ion Blaster" pretty much remains the same. So basically it give the impression that he never really answers/ reports to his "creators"- Wheeljack or Ga'mede....
COMIC SCANS/ CHARACTER STORY
The Japanese online store eHobby has posted the comic cover and story outline for the recently released MP-01B Black Convoy figure already hitting online and retail stores early this year or January 2010 to be exact. According to TFW2005's own SydneyY, the text provided roughly translates as:
"Since the introduction of Galvatron II into the fierce battle which ensued, had resulted in the Destrons regaining their strength. The hoard of Destrons then started taking over energy sources aggressively in many locations. Laser Ultra Magnus had recognised the severity of the situation, but to no avail, the Cybertrons were unable to match the strength/might and sheer brute strength of the newest and deadly Destron Warrior. Ga'Mede came up with a plan that would work on the fear which the Convoy Destron soldiers subconsciously have; that is, the Cybertrons would create their version of a "Convoy type" known as "Elde Droids" and send them onto the battlefield. Wheeljack made copies of the first droid until there were 21 of them, and controlled remotely by Flipsides, thereby dispatching each Elde Droid for their heavy mission at hand"
According to eHobby this is a 12 page comic with story by Naoto Sakai and art by Hidetsugu Yoshioka. For further reading and translation of the Exclusive comic and introductory story of the bad-A$ MP-01 Convoy Black version, please click the credited link from www.the-arker.com! / courtesy of mirror-and link by www.Seibertron.com Warning: SPOILER ALERT! Woah.... Convoy Black is awesomely portrayed as an all action Convoy, PLUS he looks to be the total opposite of the more benevolent righteous Convoy/Optimus Prime, devoid of feelings and one with no remorse/ guilt = >:)
CAB-TRUCK MODE
If there is only one word to describe MP-01 Black Convoy's cab-truck mode, it would be : Sexy. Seriously, in my eyes, the "Black and Maroon" combination never fails to add some level of uber-awesomeness in any of those major repaints ever done on a Transformer character. The Red coloured-head lights make the vehicular mode one mean looking MOFO of a Truck. Imposing and a road rage warrior. A+
FINAL THOUGHTS
IMHO, this particular repaint is just for serious fans of the character and Masterpiece Convoy mold. For me I will not give a really biased view just because its a cool repaint/ exclusive and it fits the nature of the character. Therefore there are both pros and cons when it comes to justifying paying a high price for what is essentially a repaint.Final word is MP-01 Convoy Black Version/ and no--he is NOT the Destron black repaint "Scourge/ Black Convoy" gets a fair grade of B+ for being a straight repaint, and a very highly deserved A+ for the new/dynamic and interesting character back-story arc. Get him if you area completest collector and dig black repaints. Otherwise, if you want to obtain something which does not burn a huge sum of hard earned cash / price range is putting you off (RM400 to a whopping RM600+!)-- give it a miss and buy other awesome figures.
A tall, Dark-- and mysterious stranger with an uncertain future, conflicting and a painful past? To me maybe he is just suffering from an identity crisis and a really mean streak.. or it could just be Optimus Prime caught on a really bad day..LOL!
